Why I Am Passionate About Posture
I am Dr. Kathryn Meeks. I want to share with you my knowledge and experiences to help you better understand how I can help you improve your posture, move, feel and look better. I am sure you are asking yourself, who am I and why should you trust me. I have a Bachelors and Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy and I am a Certified Ergonomist. An Ergonomist studies the science of how people interact with work and their environment. I have worked in my field for decades and helped thousands of people regain function, improve their posture and look, feel better…
I wanted to share with you my “aha moment” that made me passionate about the posture.
I had been practicing physical therapy for many years and finally started my own small business. Like all small business owners there are always challenges. In 1998 I started a new ergonomic contract with a high-tech business in Silicon Valley. I was so excited to be back on my feet again. At the same time, after several years of hoping to start a family, our wishes finally came true. Everything was smooth sailing for a while until our little kiddo decided she wanted to be born early. Yes, 3 months early. She weighed 2# 1oz. and was in the hospital for 3 months. At one year old she was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which affects how you control your movement; we think due to her low birth weight. Now life was getting interesting, if it wasn’t already. As I watched my daughter grow, thrive and struggle all at the same time, it made me look at things differently as a Physical Therapist and a Mom. I really was able to see what happens when you don’t have normal motion. It made me realize that most people do not know how their body works and move and they are using them in ways that are causing harm and injury. You probably know how your car or computer works better than your body. My “aha moment” came when I saw how hard my daughter worked to do some of the simplest tasks that most of us take advantage of. It made me think that I wanted to work with people who really wanted to reach their goals. I was thinking of the many people, I have helped learn to move easier and feel better. The most common response that I get, when I work with people, is “why didn’t anyone tell me this before now?” or “how come I didn’t know that?” or “can you tell that to my teenager?” It made me realize that my knowledge was very valuable and that I needed to reach a larger audience who wanted this information.
I knew what I wanted to do but I didn’t know how to get it done. My access to people was as a physical therapy patient (these clients already had an injury or pain) or as an ergonomic client. I did not have access to a larger population. The population that I knew needed and wanted this information. I was kind of stuck…
…And then came my next challenge
The company that I was contracting to was bought out, and long story short, I lost the contract. Pretty much all my work. This was a tough time for me. I really did not have any direction or vision of how to achieve my goal of reaching out to a greater population and sharing my knowledge. I was losing confidence in myself. New physical therapists were coming into the field with higher education degrees. I decided to go back to grad school. I applied for a Doctorate Physical Therapy program and was accepted. It was a grueling process. Now my daughter is in 6th grade. She and I studied alongside each other for 3 years. I was up at 5:15am almost every day for 3 years to study before work or before my family woke up. I would work, come home, have family time and study late into the night. This time changed me. I began to believe in myself again and believe in what I could do. I could see my vision and path again. In the few years following my graduation, I was asked to speak at a National Conference. A paper I wrote in grad school was accepted to be presented at an International Conference and was published in their journals. I also published a continuing education course to pass my knowledge to colleagues in my field.
